CONVERSATION: Paula Wilson & Mira Burack with Alicia Inez Guzmán

Join artists Paula Wilson and Mira Burack for a conversation with writer and historian Alicia Inez Guzmán, in conjunction with their solo shows at 516 ARTS this summer. The artists will speak about their respective art practices, inspirations and relationship to their particular place and time in New Mexico as makers. 



Paula Wilson, born and raised in Chicago, has exhibited her work in group exhibitions nationally and internationally at such venues as the Studio Museum in Harlem, Sikkema Jenkins & Co. and Denny Dimin Gallery in New York, Emerson Dorsch Gallery in Miami, The Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha, Nebraska, The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, Center for Contemporary Art Santa Fe, Johan Berggren Gallery in Malmö, Sweden, and Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw, Poland. She has received numerous grants and awards including a Joan Mitchell Artist Grant, Art Production Fund’s P3Studio Artist-in-Residency at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, and the Bob and Happy Doran Fellowship at Yale University. Her work is included in the collections of The Studio Museum in Harlem, Yale University Art Gallery, Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, and Seatchi Gallery. Wilson received her MFA from Columbia University in New York.

Mira Burack received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a Bachelor of Arts in the Studio Art and Psychology from Pepperdine University. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up on the coast of Maine. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at the CUE Art Foundation in New York City, Center Galleries in Detroit, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Muskegon Art Museum, Cranbrook Art Museum, Media Knox Gallery in Slovennia, Art Gallery of Windsor for Creative Studies. She received a Community + Public Arts Detroit grant for The Edible Hut, a community space with a living edible roof. Recently relocated to rural New Mexico after living in Detroit for 10 years, Burack spends her time learning from this new landscape, making, and enjoying her family.

Alicia Inez Guzmán grew up in the northern New Mexico village of Truchas where she first began hearing stories around the land. With a PhD in visual and cultural studies from the University of Rochester, NY, she now writes for local, national, and international publications on histories of land use, culture, and contemporary Chicanx and Indigenous art. She is the author of Georgia O’Keeffe at Home and was a 2017 Creative Capital Foundation Arts Writers Grant recipient. Alicia is currently senior editor of New Mexico Magazine.
