At Home in the World

February 6 – April 16, 2016

516 ARTS presented At Home in the World, the first exhibition of our 10th anniversary year. It explored belonging and place, examining how we relate to each other, ourselves and our countries as globalization forces us to rethink issues of nationality, citizenship and migration. A series of public programs included activities with guest artists, presentations and performances.

At Home in the World asked the viewer to contemplate their place and sense of belonging in the world both locally and globally. This exhibition reconsidered place within the larger contexts of nationhood and the global stage. It asked: how do place, migration, cultural expression and civic-mindedness factor into the issues of nationalism and citizenship? What makes a good citizen? The work of 14 local, national and international artists at 516 ARTS and public programs explored different aspects of and perspectives on these questions. Topics addressed included nationality, local and global community dynamics, migration/immigration, multiculturalism and stewardship.
