Martin Wannam, Memoria, wax, bananas, cinder blocks, tv monitor; on view at 516 ARTS

Martin Wannam

For my window display, I am engaging with the history of the United Fruit Company and its legacy of power though imperialism that has continued to exist by U.S. government intervention in counties such as, Guatemala, El Salvador and Colombia. Using a video performance, I focus on the brown body; showing my nude body physically branded with a burner pen to multiple bananas with the word “memoria” (English, memory). As a citizen of Guatemala, memory is something we lack, using the performance as a way to bring back that memory to my community and the places where brown bodies exist. Red bananas made of wax distributed on the floor in the window, draw a connection to the hidden history of this deadly fruit. www.martinwannam.com
