Opening Reception

Saturday, June 4, 6-8pm

Concurrently with Across the Great Divide, 516 ARTS will host a related exhibition in the downstairs gallery organized by guest curator Erin Elder titled Worlds Outside This One, featuring a group of emerging international artists and innovators responding to the legacy of homesteading, squatting, hermitage and fort building. The exhibition addresses the urge for momentary acts of self-determination, creating hand-hewn spaces in the gallery and interactive experiences for visitors, as well as showcasing blueprints, shelters, journals and maps. Looking to those who create ad-hoc communities and makeshift structures through art practice as well as daily life, this exhibition illuminates the productive tension between Do-It- Yourself autonomy and shared notions of Utopia. Many of the featured artists in Worlds Outside This One are also architects, philosophers, entrepreneurs, urban planners, economists and community builders, including the following 17 individuals and collectives from around the globe:

Panel Discussion
The Construction of the Counterculture: The Role of Women & the Place of Architecture

516 ARTS presents a panel discussion in conjunction with the concurrent exhibitions opening the same evening (6-8pm):  The panelists will discuss the various and eclectic architectural styles that developed as commune members designed and built their own homes, from the viewpoint of both residents as well as experts in the field. The discussion will also cover the often-misunderstood status of women in the rural communes, supplanting the stereotype of barefoot women holding toddlers with stories of the strong independent women of the Huerfano Valley. Some of the panelists will share personal experiences from living the communal lifestyles of that era at Libre and Red Rockers, communities in the Huerfano Valley of Southern Colorado, where they lived close to the earth to fulfill basic human needs, raise families, educate children, design and build their own homes.

Roberta Price, Mary Corey, Linda Fleming, Arnold Valdez, Erin Elder and moderated by Mary Anne Redding, curator of Across the Great Divide, and Curator of Photography, Palace of the Governors/ New Mexico History Museum.

Richard Levy is hosting an opening reception and silent auction of photographs from What I Saw to benefit local  nonprofit organizations 516 ARTS and Seed2Need. Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Richard Levy Gallery and give back to the community!
