Welcome to 516 ARTS
516 ARTS is an independent, nonprofit art space located at 516 Central Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets in the center of Downtown Albuquerque. The 5500 square foot, two-story gallery is a unique, hybrid venue somewhere between a gallery and museum, which was launched as generator of arts and culture in the city's urban core. The adventurous exhibitions program features high caliber, content-driven work through a series of collaborations. The mission of 516 ARTS is to present high quality arts exhibitions and programs, provide educational outreach, develop community and audiences for the arts in Downtown Albuquerque, and to forge links for the arts between Albuquerque, Santa Fe and beyond.
516 ARTS offers something for everyone, showcasing a mix of local, national and international artists working in all visual media including film. Programs include gallery talks, educational tours, live music and poetry performances. 516 ARTS offers exhibition tours to individuals, schools and community groups, and ongoing educational programs for youth. Programs include collaborations with museums and organizations, such as SITE Santa Fe, the Santa Fe Art Institute, UNM Department of Art and Art History, the New Mexico Museum of Art, the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum, and the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program, among others.
516 ARTS presents Trappings: Albuquerque, part of the national tour of Trappings: Stories of Women, Power and Clothing created by Two Girls Working, the collaboration by artists Tiffany Ludwig and Renee Piechocki. The exhibition tour is in conjunction with the release of their book of the same title. Their artwork Trappings begins by asking women to respond to the question: what do you wear that makes you feel powerful? Two Girls Working have interviewed over 600 women in fifteen states. Through its multiple parts Trappings ignites conversations about the meaning and expression of power. Trappings Albuquerque includes a two-floor exhibition at 516 ARTS and public art installations on the D-Ride buses and on banners along Central Avenue in Downtown.
