CUT UP OR SHUT UP • An evening of collage films
Thursday, April 17, 8pm • admission is free
516 ARTS presented an evening of collage films in conjunction with Experiments in Cinema V. 3.0, the 3rd annual festival of international, experimental film organized by Bryan Konefsky of Basement Films and the Department of Cinematic Arts at UNM. The title of this event, Cut Up or Shut Up, was based on a 1972 text of the same name by William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin, where the authors explored a cut-up technique of writing that they first popularized in the 1960s. For this program Bryan Konefsky has assembled a collection of films that focus on the cut and paste aesthetic of collage and will include, amongst others, work by Stan Vanderbeek, who inspired Terry Gilliam’s animation for the Monty Python comedy group, and Virgil Widrich, whose work titled Fast Film might be one of the most ambitious collage films ever made.
Experiments In Cinema V 3.0 took place April 18–20, 2008 at the Guild Cinema and the Southwest Film Center at UNM. For more information about the festival, please visit http://www.basementfilms.org/experiments.html or contact Bryan Konefsky at bryank@unm.edu.
