ON THE RADIO:

Native America Calling
Wednesday, June 19, 11am

Tune in at 11:00am MST to Native America Calling on KUNM 89.9 FM or listen online at www.nativeamericacalling.com. Join host Tara Gatewood and Native America Calling's electronic talking circle to participate in a conversation featuring some of the voices from this summer's exhibitions at 516 ARTS. Guest artists and curators will explore the purpose that art plays in Indigenous communities and beyond. 

BANNER PROJECT PUBLIC PROCESS:

Impact Vs. Influence: Banners, Flags & Give-Aways
Tuesday – Thursday, June 25–27, 12-5pm 

Guest artists John Hitchcock and Emily Arthur will collaborate with Marwin Begaye and Ryan O'Malley on the public printing of a large-scale banner in the front gallery of 516 ARTS. The public is invited to participate and observe in this process. Individuals and groups are welcome. This event is free however reservations are required. Read more

PUBLIC SCREENPRINTING & PARADE AT THE DOWNTOWN GROWERS' MARKET:

Print Blitz and Parade of Flags
Saturday, June 29, 9am / 11am 

The public is invited to observe and participate in the production of multiple prints, using guest artists' designs on both paper and fabric, many of which will then be ceremonially distributed in the Native tradition of "give-aways". The event will culminate with a Parade of Flags led by the large banner from the Banner Project in process at 516 ARTS in the days prior. Bring t-shirts to print on! Read more

PUBLIC FORUM:

Indigenous Arts in Global Contexts
Saturday, June 29, 4pm 

This event brings together curators and artists from the concurrent exhibitions Air, Land, Seed and Octopus Dreams and examines current curatorial themes and practices, including topics relating to printmaking as a political intervention, the diasporic experience, Native sovereignty and how Indigenous art has been received and interpreted by international audiences. Read more

EXHIBITION OPENINGS:

Air, Land, Seed  and Octopus Dreams
Saturday, June 29, 6-8pm 

Two new exhibitions focusing on contemporary Native American artists in global contexts. For Air, Land, Seed Nancy Marie Mithlo assembled a collaborative team for the 2013 Venice Biennale and 516 ARTS who re-envision relationships among artists, curators, scholars, museums and viewers. Octopus Dreams features Native artists from across the country who were selected to represent Native America abroad in Russia last year and are shown together at 516 ARTS for the first time in the United States.

Thursday, August 29, 7pm 

ADD TEXT Guest artist Nicole Dextras will give a talk and demonstration featuring the Nomadik Harvest Dress, which will be animated to demonstrate its transformation from garment to shelter. The dress will also display a variety of New Mexico's indigenous edible plants and a communal dish will be served. Read more

Art at the Border: 21st Century Responses
Saturday, October 12,  6-8pm 

In conjunction with the November 2013 publication of guest curator Kate Bonansinga's book Curating at the Edge: Artists Respond to the U.S./Mexico Border, this exhibition investigates the artistic practices of contemporary artists who address the current sociopolitical environment of the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Read more
